I needed to turn this into the next episode of Blogtable--the biggest and boldest yet. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Stanisław Lem, Samuel R. His books include Solaris (1961; translated 1970) and Dzienniki gwiazdowe (1957; translated as two books: The Star Diaries, 1976, and Memoirs of a Space Traveler, 1982). The trajectory of Gibson seems to me very interesting. Psionics: The Next Stage in Human Evolution has some cyberpunk elements, such as government conspiracies controlling the media, being able to hack computers using psionic powers, and cybernetic implants.

They're important to the story, it would not be the same without them. Wells' The War of the Worlds was written as a critique of British imperialism; depicting the United Kingdom as a victim of it at the tentacles of the technologically superior Martians, rather than as a perpetuator of it as it had been in his time. The protagonist's husband is dying of a rare neurologic disease, and her company refuses to let her try to find the cure on the grounds that the time she spent searching for it wouldn't be cost effective (only eight people in the country have the disease).
