This fair tale is a little different from the others because rather than sanitizing the original, it was modified by the original author to make it more gruesome. Makes me wonder if this is non-threatening lesson for children about trust (i.e. you can trust your parents but there are those outside the home who will not tell you truth and who will try and manipulate situations) and also in the way these stories privilege cleverness generally. In “The Jew in the Brambles” the protagonist happily torments a Jew by forcing him to dance in a thicket of thorns.
